QUESTIONNAIRES 2011

Hungary 2011

We all understand the importance of raising our children’s awareness in respect to the surrounding world – in general and in terms of countries, languages and culture – in particular. In order to promote such awareness, it was important for us – at the beginning of this project, to assess our children’s initial knowledge. For this reason, we made the following questionnaire, consistent of five simple questions – answered by 20 children from each of the participant-countries. The following is a summary of all the results and respectively – all similarities and differences, observed:

The questions:

1.    What nationalities you know?
2.    What languages you know?
3.    Why is it important to learn languages?
4.    If you have a guest from abroad, what would you show him / her?
5.    Why is it good to visit other countries?

The questionnaires are enclosed.

The evaluation:

Answers to Question № 1

The answers to question № 1 show that as a general rule, the children are most aware of the respective neighbouring countries as well as countries they have visited (during vacations) or associate with certain popular activities (e.g. football etc.).

Answers to Question № 2

The answers to question № 2 show that most frequently the children mentioned the English language (see below). This question produced the biggest variety of answers as languages of neighbouring countries as well as German were usually mentioned. It was interesting to observe the fact that although many foreign countries are known, it seemed complicated for the children, to associate these countries with their respective languages.

Answers to Question № 3

The answers to question № 3 show that the children associate the importance of learning foreign languages with the ability to communicate with people of different nationalities. The English language was most frequently mentioned – most probably because of its popularity among the parents (as first choice foreign language) as well as its usage in the popular culture (television, music, etc.).

Answers to Question № 4

The answers to question № 4 show that the children are well aware of their respective countries’ and cities’ values (e.g. the Spanish flamenco, the English parks, the Hungarian sights, the Turkish mosques, the Estonian flag, etc.). But asked about what they would show to a foreign guest – the children could mainly think of their immediate surroundings (e.g. kindergarten, city of residence, etc.).

Answers to Question № 5

The answers to question № 5 most obviously show that all children – irrespective of their nationality, are curious in discovering foreign countries and people. Most of the kids believe that visiting other countries is an opportunity for making friendships and gaining new experience.

The most common answers (by country):

Turkey:

1.    Japanese, Hungarian, Estonian, Bulgarian, Spanish
2.    English, German, Bulgarian
3.    to talk to strangers, to understand each other
4.    bazaar, city centre, shopping centre
5.    to see other countries, learn other languages

Estonia:

1.    English, Finnish, Swedish, Russian
2.    English, Finnish, Russian
3.    to be able to speak when we go to another country
4.    Estonian things
5.    to know more (e.g. about other countries, people, languages)

Hungary:

1.    English, American, Spanish, French
2.    English, German, Italian
3.    to be able to speak when we go to another country
4.    sights in Debrecen
5.    to make friends, see how foreign people live, learn languages, know other countries

Spain:

1.    neighbouring nationalities
2.    Spanish, English, Japanese
3.    to understand other people
4.    seaside, parks, football, flamenco
5.    to see different things, make friends

England:

1.    many nationalities (most of the kids know the Turkish)
2.    Turkish, Spanish, English (the answers are very interesting)
3.    many children cannot say why is it good to learn languages
4.    parks
5.    various answers, holiday, sights, shops, to see friends

The English questionnaire was the most colourful one. One can see how many different nationalities are present in the school. It should also be mentioned that number of English children cannot explain the importance of learning foreign languages. This might be explained with the lesser extent to which they are exposed to languages other than English.
